Notes: M. Arrecinus Clemens, cos suff 73, was a senator when appointed praetorian prefect in 70, which was highly unusual, but whether he was praetor urbanus is disputed.
Literature Absil: Prefets du Pretoire d'Auguste a Commodo (1997) p.129-130 (§7 M. Arrecinus Clemens, PP (38-)41), p.149-150 (§23 M. Arrecinus Clemens, PP 70-71)
Alföldy: Fasti Hispanienses (1969) p.22-23 (M. Arrecinus Clemens, governor of Hisp Cit ?81-?84)
Baroni: Adlectiones ed Adlecti (2011) p.191-194 (family connections to Iulius Lupus and the Flavii)
Castritius, Helmut: "Zu den Frauen der Flavier", in Historia, Bd. 18, 1969, p.492-494 (asserts that Julia dt of emperor Titus, was the daughter of his first wife
Arrecina Tertulla and not his second wife Marcia Furnilla, since Arrecina's mother was a Julia.
Crook: Consilium Principis (1955) p.151 (§31 M. Arrecinus Clemens, amicus of the Flavians, secret agent of Domitian)
Demougin, S: "Un noeveau membre de la Gens Arrecina", in Mefra, vol.90, 1978, p.317-330 (in spite of the tribus of Ariminum is Aniensis, not Camilia, Demougin
prefers to see him as the same man as the praefctus praetorio A1073)
Demougin, S: "Triumviri Augustales", in Mefra, vol.100, 1988, p.117-126 (reading AE19-200 as "III vir aug(ustalis)" and not "III vir, aug(ur)" in career of Dem289,  )
Devreker: Romeinse senaat onder de Flaviërs (69-96) (1973/74) p. §599 (M. Arrecinus Clemens, the adiutor curatoris aquarum)
Easton, Jeffrey Adam: "Rising from below. The families of Roman municipal freedmen and social mobility in the Roman Empire", dissertation University of Toronto, 2019,
p.208-210 discusses M. Arrecinus Clemens. The Arrecini could originally derive from Aricia, where several are attested.
Eck, Werner: "Beforderungskriterien innerhalb der senatorischen Laufbahn, dargestellt an der Zeit von 69 bis 138 n. Chr.", in ANRW 2.1, 1974, p.208
M. Arrecinus Clemens is termed on a water pipe "sub cura", indicating a curator aquarum. However this office was held by M. Acilius Aviola 74-97; in stead Eck suggests
he was the adiutor (assistant) to the curator aquarum, not a aenior consular, but his otherwise unknown son of the same name.
Eck: Fasten der Statthalter 2.teil, (1983), p.196-197 (M. Arrecinus Clemens, governor of Hisp Cit, under Vespasian or Domitian, i.e. he no longer firmly
follows Alföldy's 81-84)
Eck: Senatoren von Vespasian bis Hadrian (1970) p.130-133 (M. Arrecinus Clemens governor of Hisp Cit 81/82 to 83/84 following Alfoldy, but admits could
already be from 4 after his consulate)
Houston: Roman Imperial Administrative Personnel (1971) p.22-24 (§14 M. Arrecinus Clemens, PP, possibly pr urb in 71)
Jones, B.W. and Devlin, R.: "M. Arrecinus Clemens", in Antichthon vol. 10, 1976, p.79-83 (they argue that Clemens was exiled in 87 and not executed by Domitian  J'ournal of the Australian Society for Classical Studies.
and that "praet urb" on the stone is an error for "praef urbi")
Mennella, G.: "Ancora sulla camera di M.Arrecino Clemente'", in Athenaeum 59, 1981, p.205-208 re-examines AE1947-40 and AR1981-336 and concludes that the
inscription was remodelled presumably after his damnatio memoriae, which supports "praet urb" should be "praef urb" (NOT AVAILABLE TO ME)

moved from the formerly accepted year 85 to 83 or 84)

Settipani: Continuite (2000) p.273 makes Arrecina Clementina wife of T. Flavius Sabinus cos suff 47 and not his son the cos suff of 69.
This seems less likely considering the cognomen Clemens of the consul 95.
Townend, Gavin: "Some Flavian Connections", in The Journal of Roman Studies, Vol.51, 1961 p.56-62 with stemmata on p.62. He expounds the hypothesis  that
T. Flavius Sabinus, cos 69, 72, was married to an Arrecina. Also suggests that Clemens was banished, not executed, since Suetonius (Domitian 11.1) is not explicit)
Wiegels, Rainer: "Review of Fasti Hispanienses by Geza Alföldy", in Gnomon, Bd. 46.1974, p. 193 reaches same conclusion independantly of Eck concerning the adiutor
of the curator aquarum, that he could be Clemens' son)
